Make text come alive around your home by using a sticky note, index card, or extra piece of paper to label a bird.
Hang the label on a window and discuss the letters and their meaning with your child. Labeling helps children learn that letters come together to make words and creates a print rich environment in your home.
The words in the title, Mel Fell, rhyme, meaning that the end with the same sounds (-ell). With your child, think of other words that rhyme with Mel and fell. Children love hearing rhyming words and recognizing rhyme helps students build reading skills.

In the story, Mel Fell, the baby bird goes on its first flight. Using paper or other materials (such as blocks), make a baby bird. Help your child to climb on top of a chair and drop the bird, just like Mel fell from the nest.
Discuss with your child: How did Mel feel in the nest? How did Mel feel at the end of the book?
