Read to Get Ready

Family reading is one of the best ways to support your child's language development and academic success!

Stories in the Spotlight provides each family with a thematic reading list for children of all ages to read and enjoy before taking part in the Live Arts Event! The books are easily available at Kansas City Public Library branches. Then, each family that participates in the Family Activity will also get to select a book to take home and keep for follow up reading.

"Lilly and the Pirates" at The Coterie Theater

Lilly is a ten-year-old worrywart. To keep her concerns at bay, she diligently and fervently lists them in a worry book. Her globe-trotting scientist-parents don’t worry about anything. When they learn of a rare sighting of the frangipani fruit fly, they set sail for the fabled Shipwreck Islands. Since water is her greatest fear, Lilly stays behind with her eccentric, librarian great-uncle. Then news comes that the scientists are shipwrecked, and Lilly must overcome her fear of the sea, find the hidden island, and outsmart a bunch of treasure-hungry pirates to save her parents.

Enjoy A Family Activity

It's time to bring the magic on the page to life with your imagination! Lilly and the Pirates feature puppets created by What-if Puppet. Before or after the show, families will dive into the fantastic world of "Lilly and the Pirates" with a special puppet-making experience. Guided by artists from What-if Puppet, families will learn about the puppets featured in the show, make their very own puppet to take home, and continue the storytelling adventure at home.

Hands-On Activity: Puppet-making Station opens at 1:15pm on Sat. Mar. 28, 2026. All ages are welcome!

Participation in the Family Activity is free of charge to every registered ticket-holder for either the 12:00 pm or 2:00pm show.

This drop-in workshop will take place in the Theatre Lab immediately before or after the show and will last from approximately 45 minutes.
