You can explore the museum before or after your activity, all completely free of charge.
Read to Get Ready
Mapping the Heavens
Family reading is one of the best ways to support your child's language development and academic success!
Stories in the Spotlight provides each family with a thematic reading list for children of all ages to read and enjoy before taking part in the Live Arts Event! The books are easily available at Kansas City Public Library branches. Then, each family that participates in the Family Activity will also get to select a book to take home and keep for follow up reading.

Mapping the Heavens
"Where are we? When are we?
These fundamental questions drove the development of astronomical sciences and religious practices across different times, regions, and faiths, to map and understand our place in the world and its relationship with the heavens."
Come explore art at the Nelson Atkins Museum and dive into the concepts of time and space with your child!
We will meet in Classroom 4 at 11:00am to explore the concept of time through some in-depth, hands-on art making that will be enjoyable for children of all ages. Multiple sensory-rich art experiences will provide an appreciation of different artistic media and creative processes...all connected to the concept of time and place.
Each child will choose a free book related to the theme of Mapping the Heavens to take home with them, too!
When we're finished, families can enjoy the exhibit, museum, and grounds completely free of charge.
And if you're in the mood for more activity, stop by the Bloch Building Lobby at 1:00pm for another activity, making your own sundial!
