Pre-Reading Building Block
Sit facing your baby with them on your lap. Gently hold their hands and rock back and forth as if rowing a boat. Sing or chant the first line of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" together. Talk about boats and water using simple language: "Can you row the boat?" "The boat goes on the water." "Splash, splash!"
Babies learn through repetition, rhythm, and hearing language. Singing and movement help them recognize sounds and words they will hear in the book.
Let's Play
Fill a shallow container or sink with a small amount of water (with constant adult supervision). Gather a few safe household items that float and sink. Let your baby touch the water and explore the objects. Narrate what is happening: "The boat floats!" "Splash!" "The duck is floating on the water."
Sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" again while gently moving a floating object across the water.
Talking about what your child sees, hears, and feels builds vocabulary and language comprehension. Repeating words from the story helps babies connect books to real-world experiences.
